In 2004, as part of a lawsuit settlement, Fidelity Exploration & Production Company agreed to fund the installation and five years of operations of a new U.S. Geological Survey gaging station on the Tongue River.

The gaging station is located upstream from the diversion point for the Tongue and Yellowstone Irrigation District, one of the biggest agricultural water users on the Tongue River, and downstream from Fidelity E&P's coalbed natural gas production operations. The gaging station monitors the flow and quality of water available to the irrigators in the district.
